ABSTRACT
Our goal in this volume has been to understand the variation in the causes of, and the mechanisms for the emergence of peace in post–World War II (WWII) Europe, and comparing them to the Middle East while explaining why they worked in the former, but not in the latter. Thus, one main purpose has been to apply insights gained from scholarship on the European experience to the turbulent Middle East.
