Implementation and enforcement of the Habitats Directive

Directive 92/43 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora ¹ was adopted on 21 May 1992. Member States had two years in which to transpose its provisions into their national legal order (Art 23). No general delay was fixed in the directive for compliance with its provisions. Therefore, unless provided differently in the different Articles, Member States had to achieve the results laid down in the directive by 10 June 1994, two years after the directive had been formally notified to them.
