ABSTRACT
Sound can be an enjoyable, hands-on (and ‘ears-on’!) science topic to teach, particularly if you make the most of the extensive cross-curricular links that can be made with music. During their early years children will begin to notice similarities and differences between sounds and music and will learn to discern different sounds and their sources. They will enjoy making sounds and music with their own voices and bodies and with instruments. In the Foundation Stage the exploration of sound in a play context can be achieved through ‘listening walks’, identifying sounds with eyes closed, circle games such as ‘keeper of the

keys’, and through using musical instruments such as drums, shakers and scrapers.
