ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how the daily practices and underpinning philosophies from one particular school site might inform the broader project of reframing mainstream schooling in more socially just ways. It is our intention that the chapter assists in drawing needs attention to some of the creative and effective educational practices taking place in the peripheries of formal education. The researchers agree with Connell that social justice is fundamental to schooling, rather than an add-on. Francis and Mills, makes the claim that there is a moral imperative of educators committed to pursuing socially just ends to not only critique existing models of education but to also propose potential alternatives. The chapter considers a space for connecting, rupturing and blurring boundaries between mainstreams and margins in education research, it seems appropriate to consider some of the ways that researcher might speak out, talk back, and shout from the rooftops.
