ABSTRACT

John White has defended the promotion of national sentiment as an educational aim that is compatible with liberal democracy (White 1996 , 1997 ). Among the benefi ts he has attributed to national feeling has been a willingness to support redistribution to ensure that the basic needs of all are met:

Only by fellow-feeling for the poor … will the rich have a motive for accepting redistributive policies within their own country. Attachment to one’s national community thus underpins one’s civic responsibilities.
