ABSTRACT

Sandy Hook Elementary School, in the quiet little suburban community, seemed like the safest place on earth. This school was known for the superb education that students received and was acknowledged as a Vanguard school. It had been not only a high-achieving school but a school known for its tradition of caring about the whole child. This school was an important piece of the fabric of this community. The shooter continued his rampage in a first grade classroom, killing the schools permanent substitute teacher and all but one child, who was clever enough to play dead. By this time, the teacher in the next classroom had crammed as many children as possible in the bathroom and was trying to find hiding for the others, when the shooter took aim at her and her students. The educational assistant for a young boy with special needs died trying to shield him; as did a behavior therapist.
