ABSTRACT

Archives of William Shakespeare's text and performance have been greatly enhanced by the advent of digital technology. Shakespeare Quarterly and, in particular, Shakespeare Bulletin, with its special edition edited by Carol Rutter, followed suit. The video interviews are, therefore, the raw material of the process of making a film that maps a personal encounter with Shakespeare's work. The idea of "good enough" knowledge, which has been debated at length in the field of computer science and statistical analysis, is made manifest in Shakespeare and performance research. From the moment the Internet was first made publicly accessible, the complete works of Shakespeare were seen as a test of the viability of the online world to deal with difficult material that was in demand by a range of audiences. In brief, the Shakespeare Quartos Archive has done a marvellous job of bringing together digital images of Hamlet in Quarto from a number of important international libraries.
