ABSTRACT

This essay explores the current state of the UK’s public library system in order to consider how it can survive in contemporary Britain. It will explore the historical development of libraries within the UK, highlighting their main purposes and core values as a resource to users. Analysis of reports published by the Libraries Taskforce constructs a strong image of public libraries and establishes a foundation on which further investigation can be based. The key challenges facing libraries are itemised and the various strategies adopted to combat them. Further investigations explore the sustainability of the library service as it currently stands and the essay concludes with informed suggestions on the actions stakeholders can take to ensure the survival of the public library system.
