ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the author applies a critical transfeminist perspective to explore the interplay among sex, gender, and fair play, as well as present a critical approach to inclusion in sport. Using examples of policies purported to be inclusive of gender nonconforming and sex variant athletes. The chapter highlights how these policies reproduce common stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding sex, gender, athletic bodies, and sport. Intersex athletes attempt to be inclusive, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) have taken the lead in creating policy regarding sex variant and gender nonconforming athletes. As many sport organizations look to their processes as models, it is important to carefully critique the standards they set. In a recent report, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CEES) took the unique stance of emphasizing that fair play should be aimed at the Trans and intersex athletes, not the protection of normal athletes.
