ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an account of numerous experiments made on the scattering of α - particles, but particularly by light elements, which are disintegrated by α-particles with the emission of protons, and by a heavy element, which suffers spontaneous disintegration. The experiments are concerned with the interactions of an atomic nucleus and an α - particles. In many cases of such collisions the distance between the two particles may be so small that it may not be permissible to assume either particle to behave as a point charge or to assume that the law of force is that of the inverse square. They have examined that scattering from a thin film of uranium at an angle of 135. The results, gave a nuclear charge for gold less than 2 per cent, from the atomic number, and the amount of scattering of particles of different ranges showed that the inverse square law of force.
