ABSTRACT

This chapter presents investigation which has involved the determination by the photographic method of the deflexion of the rays from the active deposit of thorium in a magnetic and electric field has been rendered possible by the use of the highly active preparation of radiothorium, separated from the mineral thorianite by Dr Hahn. Radiothorium shown by Hahn to produce thorium X, the thorium emanation, and the characteristic active deposit of thorium. The active deposit of thorium can be obtained in a thin film on a fine wire; it forms a convenient source of rays for a determination of the deflexion of the rays in a magnetic and electric field. Such an active wire emits two homogeneous types of rays which have ranges in air of 50 and 86 cm. The chapter examines the ionization curves of the active deposit of thorium had disclosed the existence of two distinct ray products, thorium B and thorium C, with different ranges in air.
