ABSTRACT

After a few days at Bloomsbury, Hans and the author separated. Hans went to some textile-works in the Midlands and author proceeded to Cambridge. Following the advice of his Baedeker the author stayed at the University Arms, which was almost as expensive as De Keyser's in London. The next few days he admired the sights of the old town and enjoyed the lovely college courts, King's Chapel and the Backs. He also tried to get into touch with the University, but in vain. Nobody seemed to understand what he wanted. They took him for a sightseeing foreigner, and when he asked for the University offices they showed him the lovely facade of the Senate House. After the end of the summer term he remained in Cambridge for the 'long vacation term' which lasted about four weeks in July. He got a room in College and came into closer contact with some undergraduates.
