ABSTRACT

The author was in his sixteenth year when his father fell ill. The first attack came when he was just arriving at the Jacobi's for a dinner party. Author's uncle, Joseph saw at once that it was very serious and he told author so the following day. The author's father recovered slowly and was able to take up part of his work. The University of Breslau had appointed him honorary full professor, a title given in rare cases to members of the staff who merited a professorial chair though there was no vacancy. The author recalls an occasion that his father insisted on attending a luncheon given every year by the director of the Breslau Zoological Gardens in its restaurant in the laying season for ostriches: 'scrambled ostrich eggs' was the main course. It was good for him that the period after father's death was his last half year at school, which kept me very busy with preparations for the examinations.
