ABSTRACT

The different German states competed with one another to attract students, by having the best and most celebrated scholars on the staff of their universities. Some of these centres of learning had of course other attractions. Munich was favoured as a 'winter university' because of its theatres, concerts, the carnival and skiing in the mountains. Heidelberg and Freiburg were the favourite places for a gay summer semester in lovely and romantic surroundings. when author studied in Zurich, he spent delightful afternoons in the pleasant house of the old Imhoffs, admiring the rare and lovely books, Roman and Greek coins, listening to the old gentleman's entertaining explanations and enjoying the patisseries at the old ladies' tea-table. When he came home from Gottingen for the holidays, he often stayed part of the time in the Neisser house, as a third and more intimate son; for the Erlers soon began to gravitate around Munich, and they both married pretty Munich girls.
