ABSTRACT

It is important to begin this paper with some clarificatio of our emphasis on leisure for women, and its relation to women's participation (and non-participation) in sport. We would argue that an analysis of ‘leisure’ for women must form a basis from which to think the position of women in sport, because, in terms of women's restricted access to any leisure time and/or facilities, there are initial problems to be negotiated. It is important to avoid straightforward comparisons between women's and men's involvement in sport, without first analysing the very different social conditions within which such involvements must develop.
