ABSTRACT

Introduction Mental health and illness have increasingly become a priority in global discussions because of their impact on individuals, families and communities. Mental illness or mental ill health has an impact on quality of life, lost days of productivity and economics status of citizens regardless of their setting (see Chapter 1). Current strategies to support the mental health of citizens have centered on recognition and treatment of those who are acutely ill and support for those who have persistent mental illness to attain and maintain their highest level of functioning. Conducting research and using evidence-based care strategies has been a goal to better address those who have mental health needs (WHO, 2015a).
