ABSTRACT

In this chapter we consider the mental health impacts of exposure to violence and how these might be addressed using health promotion strategies. While the approach adopted is heavily influenced by the service contexts of our own countries – the United States and Australia – the discussion will be contextualized within broader international concerns and responses: we will thus explore violence and its health implications both locally and globally; in the home, classroom and workplace; interpersonally and collectively; and in relation to both the primary and secondary victims of violence.
