ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. Looming largest over the forensic field, of course, is the stark reality of law and policy. The book also focuses to different aspects of mental health and wellbeing. Public policy and practice in criminal justice and forensic mental health services require a significant reframing if efforts to reduce offending are to be more effective. More work is required pertaining to so-called 'risk management' and individual agency needs to be considered a vital element of recovery among both forensic mental health consumers and offenders. With the movement away from indefinite detention and asylum to community care comes the need to focus on the expanding role of forensic mental health services to assist with the transition to the community.
