ABSTRACT

The New York Institute of Technology Student Led Architecture Build (sLAB) program evolved from individual projects that began to accrue. sLAB projects are positioned as student-led design/build projects that are embedded in community. After a jury selects the best design, the project is introduced into the curriculum, where it is developed into a buildable solution. Students who are author/designers in a competition also gain the capacity to design the competition, raising them to a higher meta-plane which allows them to understand competitive strategy. Dynamic capability meta-models are a very important component of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) program. This dynamic meta-capability in response to unanticipated and previously unseen problems becomes in and of itself a capability much needed in rapid change environments. NYIT architecture students worked on a competition to develop a recycling and education center in Costa Rica. The project involved the community service chapters of Freedom by Design and Engineers without Borders.
