ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the processes experienced while working with both the client, Oxford City Council, and the school during the ongoing live studio project. Although the authors finished the design studio that had set up the Live Projects in May 2011, they were encouraged to keep running the Oxford Academy Live Project. In July 2011 the authors developed their designs in response to the comments made during their studio review and presented them to the headteacher, financial director, and design team of the new Academy. In discussion with students involved in other Live Projects within the authors school of architecture, the authors agreed that they learned about communication, output, product, client and user interaction, brief making, materiality, and finance issues that are not usually covered in design studio. For this reason, the authors feel that design studios should engage with everyday scenarios that are dealt with in practice: real people, along with social and political.
