ABSTRACT

Speaking of the collective novice suggests an implied expectation of progress towards the collective intermediate and eventually the collective master. The overall structure of the project took off from assumptions about relatively conventional media structures where specialist organizations would produce and distribute audiovisual media for subsequent consumption by audiences. One of the main differences between experienced designers and relative novices is the ability to assess concepts and ideas based on a sense of quality. Designing collaborative media is inherently different from designing enterprise systems, personal tools, or consumer products due to the fact that the outcomes are emergent, ongoing, and contingent on dynamic and ever-changing social structures. Designing collaborative media is the changing nature of the design work, from shaping the digital material as such to facilitating social and communicative processes.
