ABSTRACT

Media art is a mixed domain, which investigates and problematizes the epistemological contexts in which it is being produced. This chapter shows that media art epistemology is framing existing trends as “domains” in a transforming action-field. As a mixed domain situation, media art is inherently involved in a dialogue with the awareness of and users of media. In the twenty-first century, at least four prominent attempts have been made to configure, or reconfigure, media art as a mixed domain in the epistemological “theatre” of global culture. These are the contextualizing and institutionalizing of media art as a new paradigm, cultural theory, the “design perspective” on media art, and the politics of media art. Media art in ubiquitous culture inscribe itself into a genealogy of practices nudging art out of the art domain and into alternative, mixed domains of implied cultural significance framed and embodied by processes and temporalities of technology.
