ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an approach integrating rule and experience-based processes. This approach is well suited for Emotionally Intelligent systems, which aim to recognize, have, and express emotions. The dichotomy of rules and exemplars is at the very heart of cognitive science. In almost each subdiscipline there is research on the question of whether specific processes are rule- or exemplar-based. Specifically, the common assumption that a main difference between rules and exemplars is their level of generality will be attacked. Emotions are part of a mediatory system to coordinate each individuals multiple plans and goals. They have adaptive functions for the individual and are based on specific cognitions. The basis of all pattern driven approaches is a concept of structural similarity. Antiunification provides a well defined method for discovering structural similarities of terms.
