ABSTRACT

The impact of developments in genetic research is achieving ever more public attention and scrutiny. The Human Genome Project is well on target with its plans to sequence the entire human genetic complement—the announcement was made in June 2000 that the initial sequencing goal had been attained. Until now this volume has focused on what is known about the genetics of attentional problems and issues that stand in our way of the advancement of genetic knowledge. The continuum versus category issue has implications for the level of symptoms required for diagnosis and for future treatment strategies. The poor communication and social skills mentioned earlier may be particularly disabling at the secondary-school level. Even students preparing for university have special needs, for instance entrance exams will require assessments for special examination supports, such as readers and writers. Educators and clinicians should be sensitive to all of these factors, and it is necessary that they be appropriately trained to manage them.
