ABSTRACT
How should cognition be studied? Perhaps the most straightforward answer is provided by the experimental approach. Empirical studies should be conducted, yielding evidence of the normal, typical functioning of the mind. Hypotheses should be generated, and theories constructed. These processes should cycle, so that new studies are devised to evaluate hypotheses and theories, and these should be improved in the light of the evidence.
