ABSTRACT
At first sight, it may seem an odd idea to write a chapter about men and mackerels. The differences between men and mackerels are as obvious and as numerous as the differences between a sixteenth century farm-house and the Empire State Building. So why should we bother with a comparison between the two? Do we learn anything about human social behavior by observing a school of fish?
