ABSTRACT

Our subjective experiences can be powerful sources of information in the guidance of our thoughts and behaviors. Consider, for example, what you would do if you began to experience boredom while reading this chapter. You might stop reading. Suppose what you experienced was confusion, rather than boredom. Although this experience might cause you to stop reading, it is also possible that it would motivate you to continue reading in the hope of obtaining clarification. Finally, what would happen if you began to experience anger while reading this chapter? Perhaps you were upset by some of the ideas presented here. If your anger were strong enough, then you might decide to confront the authors at a conference and tell them where they got things wrong.
