Violence and the Male Gender Role

The nature of the culturally defined male gender role is reviewed, followed by an examination of ways gender role and gender role conflict and strain contribute to violent behaviors. Environmental supports for adoption and adherence to the problematic aspects of the male gender role are reviewed. Implications for intervention at individual, group and institutional levels are explored.
