ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the literature on film producers and directors, offers some comments on feminist filmmaking and HIV/AIDS filmmaking, and gives reportage on interviews with 18 women AIDS filmmaker/videographers. It provides a fascinating discussion on related filmic concerns for vampirism, and calls for cinematic sensitivity regarding the physically "different". The chapter seeks a more complete understanding of women filmmakers who have decided to focus on the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Their insights about both filmmaking and HIV/AIDS enhance our understanding of women creating new discourses. The chapter presents a profile of producer/directors of AIDS films who are as rich and diverse as their backgrounds and perspectives. AIDS films produced and/or directed by women provide insight not only into women's ways of acknowledging AIDS, but also into feminist film and gender issues in filmmaking. Interviews with women producer/directors give access to their thoughts about HIV and their motivations for producing and directing AIDS films.
