ABSTRACT

In October 1991, an article appeared in the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Alliance Newsletter at San Francisco State University. The author, a self-described African-American dyke, expressed the viewpoint that no one has the right to equate the gay/lesbian/bisexual struggle for civil rights with that of the African Americans because the “gay/lesbian/bisexual agenda seems trivial” compared to the history of torture, lynchings, etc., perpetrated against African Americans. She also cited racism within the gay/lesbian/bisexual communities as another reason that her “agenda as an African American takes precedence almost always.”
