ABSTRACT

Bisexual theorists have increasingly recognized binary thinking as a source of bi oppression and have proposed alternative models. Such discussions have focused primarily on the binary divisions of gay/straight and man/woman. I would like to explore some problems of binary thinking through a variety of examples. I will discuss the limitations of some new proposed models, which reject only part of binary thinking, retaining either categorization or bipolarity, which are themselves problematic. I then explore how a non-binary view of the world can be expanded as a political tool for addressing a wide range of problems.
