AIDI AND DONG XIAN

Aidi (–1 BCE), Chinese emperor. Aidi, the last emperor of the Former Han Dynasty, had many male lovers. But the most legendary was Dong Xian. As the two men lay napping together, Dong resting his head on Aidi’s large sleeve, the emperor was called away to attend to courtly matters. Rather than awaken his drowsy lover, Aidi cut off his sleeve. Homosexual courtiers soon began the fashion of cutting their sleeves. In Chinese culture and literature, male homosexual love is referred to as duanxiu, meaning “the cut sleeve.” Aidi had no sons, bequeathing his title to Dong.
