ABSTRACT

The classical psychoanalytical position regarding homosexuality rests on the work of Karl Abraham, who linked the stages of libidinal development with stages of object love. The American Psychoanalytic Association had always regarded itself as a component society of the American Psychiatric, so one would have expected that the American Psychoanalytic will follow the psychiatric resolution. By contrast, the American Psychoanalytic is based on the psychoanalytic method, and it is bound by the teachings of Sigmund Freud. In 1973, the gay liberation movement was sufficiently powerful to make the American Psychiatric Association delete homosexuality from its diagnostic and statistical manual. R. J. Stoller suggests that the whole concept of homosexuality be given up because in fact innumerable sexual behaviors are encountered in real life. Homosexuality and other perversions remain mysterious, and what makes one person grow up straight and another gay has become inexplicable.
