ABSTRACT

Editor’s note: When I met with the Shores exactly one year after I interviewed them for “The Case,” I was struck by the difference in their attitudes. Although family members still had problems and were still involved with social services, they demonstrated a sense of optimism that had not been present earlier. Nancy no longer expressed the concern that after the book was published she would run from social worker to social worker, trying to do everything suggested. All the family members expressed anticipation about soon being able to see the finished book. They were humble about their contribution (“It wasn’t anything”), but at the same time they were proud of their participation.
