ABSTRACT
The various schools of psychoanalytic thought may define specific fundamentals of psychoanalysis somewhat differently, but all recognize a core set of fundamentals of technique that allow and protect the existence of analytic freedom. Analytic freedom is essential to the process of successful psychoanalysis. The patient must be allowed analytic freedom to think, to feel, to speak, and to explore his or her inner life. The ongoing, and perhaps endless, process of determining which health care procedures are to be denied significant amounts of insurance money and which are to receive heavy insurance subsidy has become a political and economic process, rather than a medical and scientific one. Popular acceptance of managed care by business, government, and the general public, and the willingness of a majority of health care professionals to participate, make managed care the method of cost containment accountability being employed to replace other accountability methods by most private insurance entities.
