ABSTRACT

Obviously in disasters, the basics of human physiology are most important and cannot be ignored. Beyond basic bodily functions, it was clear that in life-threatening situations, people turn more to their faith than to psychiatrists and mental health professionals when it comes to coping with the emotional impact. There were signs advertising free crisis counseling dotting the vicinity, but it appeared there were few takers. The clinic nurse and her assistant were invaluable in their organizational skills and their knowledge of the culture, language, and the individual patients. The request for their help came from Nyack College, a Christian college with two campuses, one of them five blocks from Ground Zero. Many of the students had jobs in the World Trade Center. Many watched the planes crash into the buildings and saw people jumping to their deaths and other traumatic sights. This situation was entirely different from that in Turkey.
