ABSTRACT

Kids’ Corner was, at first, a safe haven for children that ended up on Pier 94 as a nursery where children could receive brief psychotherapy. The real spirit and energy that came together to create Kids’ Corner arose spontaneously in a group of volunteers and it was overwhelmingly determined by the time and place. Eight eager-to-help volunteers descended on the first child who entered the space, enclosed by the long tables and the three foam, low-backed sofas. All of us saw the lack of wisdom in this. The boy asked for candy and left with his mother and with a general invitation to come back. The next visitor was a young, very sad-looking Asian woman clutching close her year-old toddler. She asked for and was given a teddy bear—that, too, was clutched tightly by the child. They returned later, and the child’s mother talked of her loss.
