ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the book 'Serials in the Park' which focuses on the most significant trends and innovations for patrons to use. It explains a letter from Thomas Jefferson to Meriwether Lewis, which contains the detailed instructions regarding the proposed Corps of Discovery. The North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) issued instructions to NASIG members and serialists everywhere to travel to Oregon for the 18th annual NASIG Conference. The chapter shows that many presenters found rich metaphorical possibilities relevant to serials work in the conference theme of 'Serials in the Park'. The Research Set offered seven workshops which described innovative or experimental projects designed to foster new uses of data and access to electronic information: Two workshops reported projects that extended the use of data stored in the MARC record; One workshop dealt with use statistics for full-text journals and remaining workshops reported projects to benchmark the cost of staffing serials operations.
