ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book chronicles the events and experiences of Occupational Therapy Practitioners (OTPs) dealing with the 9/11 disaster and its aftermath. Their personal and professional narratives describe what it was like the day of the tragedy, the Ground Zero Milieu and the role of Spirituality in their own healing process and in the process of healing others. Intimate accounts accented by interspersed photographs unfold the horror, humanity, fear, reverence, turmoil, spirit, drive, and compassion of the time. It presentes the opportunity to focus on what happened, to organize an otherwise disorganized frightening traumatic event, and to experience the personal growth and healing of many of the chapter contributors as they wrote and reworked their material. The healing aspect of storytelling is very powerful and people told of their experiences and/or thoughts about the attacks over and over again.
