ABSTRACT

Billy is a New York City firefighter from Firehouse Engine 292 and Rescue 4. It was one of the first companies to respond to the World Trade Center site. Rescue workers may face special emotional challenges. Billy's firehouse has suffered devastating losses. Fortunately, Billy was off on Father's Day and was called by one of the firefighters about what had happened. Instinctually, Billy drove to the site to help his brothers. Once he was given a briefing at Ground Zero, he began working. He admits that from the start of his work he became so obsessed with rescuing possible survivors that he could not stop working. He said that although a therapist comes to the firehouse to speak with the men on an individual basis, he felt more comfortable speaking with a friend about his ordeal. The men at the firehouse have had much support from the New York City communities.
