ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the implementation and outcomes of an incentive system, developed to improve school behaviors and interactions for children experiencing homelessness. It presents the results of an evaluation project in which quantitative and qualitative methods were used to examine the impact of the incentive system at the Project Connect (PC) Summer Camp. The 'Bracelet Behavior Program' at the (PC) Summer Camp was an incentive system designed to promote positive behaviors and social skills for a group of children who were homeless. Academic activities focus on learning vocabulary words, improving reading comprehension and spelling skills, and improving expressive writing and composition skills. The Handbook of School-Based Interventions is a good resource for developing prevention programs to address discipline problems, impulsivity, as well as disruptive, aggressive, and destructive behaviors in classroom settings. In summary, results provided preliminary support for continuing the use of the Bracelet Program to promote positive behaviors at the PC Summer Camp.
