ABSTRACT

A pastoral psychotherapist with a relational orientation offers an introduction to sandplay and describes how this tactile, symbolic modality can provide opportunities for women to explore their spirituality in the therapeutic setting. The challenges and yearnings women face in confronting traditional religious symbols are discussed, with specific suggestions on how to set up a sandtray, how to attend to the sandplayer, how to interpret the scene, and how to understand client reluctance. A list of resources where therapists can obtain sandtrays and miniatures is included. [Article copies available for a fee from The Haworth Document Delivery Service: 1-800-HAWORTH.
