ABSTRACT

SUMMARY. This article explores the process of integrating a feminist identity for both experienced and emerging feminists. A qualitative analysis was utilized to identify themes in two group dialogues. The analysis indicated that the era in which experienced feminists were initiated into feminism framed this movement as liberating and empowering, while emerging feminists described a process of initial resistance when encountering feminism. Emerging feminists discussed having to overcome negative media images of feminism before becoming motivated to integrate this identity. Both groups relayed challenges in communicating feminist principles and the practices they used to meet these difficulties. Findings in this article are discussed in relation to the need for a sensitive 6presentation of feminism to young women in classrooms or professional settings.
