ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a discussion of the basic assumptions and values underlying faith-based approaches to fatherhood promotion. The reason for establishing a relationship with God first is that faith-based approaches to fatherhood promotion assume that knowledge of God's relationship with His children provides the model for how human fathers should relate to their children. The largest and most visible men's ministry emphasizing the role of men as fathers is Promise Keepers. At the foundation of Promise Keepers are "Seven Promises" focusing on spiritual development; pursuing accountability fellowship relationships with other men; maintaining sexual, moral, and ethical purity; building a strong family; supporting one's church; racial reconciliation; and sharing one's faith with others. Dad: The Family Shepherd targets Christian fathers of all ages, socioeconomic levels, and races. Its primary mode of intervention is conferences involving groups of men, usually in a church or retreat setting.
