ABSTRACT
Albion W. Small, first chair of first department of sociology in the United States at the University of Chicago, agreed to edit the American Journal of Sociology at the end of the nineteenth century. The following titles, all published in the United States, are those offered as 'Journals of the Century' in the area of general sociological theory and practice: The American Journal of Sociology has been published in the United States by the University of Chicago Press since 1895. Population and Development Review which began publication in 1975 by the Population Council in New York, is the first. Gender and Society is published by Sage. Sociology of Education is another publication of the American Sociological Association. However, journal Social Problems, published by the University of California for the Society for the Study of Social Problems, provides enough broad-based theoretical coverage of the area and receives enough notice to be included on the list for sociology.
