ABSTRACT

Therapists find it difficult to talk about impasses or failed therapies, yet doing so can be quite constructive. Often impasses can be broken through a cataclysmic event which occurs outside the therapy office and therapy resumes on a deeper level. This chapter discusses the categories in terms of the therapist's counter transference process: that which ends in a "premature termination"; that which stays stuck for an excruciatingly long period of time until the therapist initiates termination; that which stays stuck for a long period of time where the client initiates termination. As therapists we each have varying degrees of success with each type depending on our training, personality and trigger areas. The chapter describes the therapeutic failure that occurs when the client won't come in. It talks about the use of the visualizations in a variety of instances ranging from common phobias to work with chronic illness.
