ABSTRACT

The relationship of mental health consultation to entry issues, choices of targets, particular strategies, and evaluation concerns is highlighted. Gerald caplan model of mental health consultation is the prototypic consultation approach. In 1970, mental health consultation was a revolutionary step away from classical Freudian or psychodynamic psychology. The body of caplan work is particularly relevant to the future of psychology in the schools. Schools offer organized settings of well-trained professionals who accept the responsibility of providing services to children and youth. A comprehensive school psychology informed by Caplanian ideas would involve the deployment of enough psychologists to keep ahead of the unrelenting press of clinical cases. Psychologists must be important members of many teams and plan interventions for children based on children’s particular needs and their special potentials. Ecological interventions with children in schools include classroom organization, interdependent learning, peer tutoring, parent programs, teacher programs, and program implementation research.
