ABSTRACT

The film Love and Diane, by Jennifer Dworkin, follows the lives of Diane Hazzard, her daughter, Love Hazzard, and Love’s son Donyaeh. Diane had previously lost custody of her six children due to her drug abuse. At the time of the filming, which extended over a period of five years, Diane is attempting reunification with some of her children. Jennifer Dworkin, the filmmaker, virtually lived with the family during this period capturing many of the crucial events in real time as Donyaeh is placed in foster care due to alleged neglect on Love’s part, followed by the eventual reunification of the family. This chapter pursues the themes of trauma, repetition and repair as they occur in the events documented in the film.
