ABSTRACT

Several years ago the author proposes to designate as 'the work of the negative' all the psychic operations of which repression is the prototype and which later gave rise to distinct variations such as negation, disavowal and foreclosure. Moreover, it has been adopted by numerous analysts. The obstacle of the resistances met with in treatment and the analyst's temptation to overcome them, albeit by their analysis, involved a danger of returning to hypnosis. 'A negative judgement is the intellectual substitute for repression', says Freud. Negative hallucination is the theoretical concept which is the precondition for any theory of representation, whether it is dreams or hallucination which is concerned. The hallucinations are the creations - in the strict sense of the word - the children of Schreber's mind. Generation is found both in Schreber's semantics as well as in his syntax. Negative hallucination is its precondition.
