ABSTRACT

The outlook on waste gives grounds for optimism that our future may not be so gloomy. While, clearly, there is no room for complacency – we’re only at the start of the journey – indicators between 2003 and 2008 (indeed, between editions of this book) show that behavioural change is possible. In England, recycling rates are up and landfill rates are down. 1 Behind the headlines are nevertheless some alarming trends, which this chapter will try to address.
